TNA 101
Special Late Week Edition
By Talon Thorne
Hello TNAddicts, I know that my columns usually come out on TNA Tuesday as opposed to later in the week but there were a few major things I wanted to report on. This website needs a news column where the columnist reports on the news of the week and how it affects TNA. I was thinking about giving myself a pseudo name but thought it would be too much work to get out two columns. So heres the business.
Ratings Analysis
I recently did some research looking into the ratings history of iMPACT! since they have come to Spike TV. I did the rating from 2005 through 2008 (without recent TV data). My source is the same where all critics receive their news, the Neilson Ratings. Here is the data you need to know:
Ratings History (Average for all shows)
October 2005 (0.8)
November 2005 (0.8)
December 2005 (0.8)
January 2006 (0.9)
February 2006 (0.8)
March 2006 (0.8)
April 2006 (0.9)
May 06 (1.0)
June 06 (1.0)
July 06 (0.9)
August 06 (0.8)
September 2006 (0.8)
October 06 (0.9)
November 06 (0.9)
December 06 (1.0)
January 07 (1.0)
February 07 (0.9)
March 07 (1.0)
April 07 (1.0)
May 07 (1.0)
June 07 (1.1)
July 07 (1.1)
August 07 (1.0)
September 07 (1.1)
October 07 (1.05)
November 07 (1.1)
December 07 (1.1)
There are a few landmark changes that should be taken into consideration:
-April 9: TNA iMPACT moves to Thursday Nights
-November 2006: TNA Moves to Primetime and Vince Russo comes on as a writer
-October 2007: TNA goes 2-hours (should not help increase ratings like other landmark changes)
I averaged out the ratings in time periods, for both Pre-Russo Era and Russo Era:
OCT 05-APR 06 (0.8)
MAY 06- OCT 06 (0.9)
OCT 06-APR 07 (1.0)
MAY 07-OCT 07 (1.1)
NOV 07-NOW (1.1/1.2)
What should be noted about these ratings is that from OCT 05- OCT 06, Vince Russo was no part of TNA. There were ratings increases that could be contributed to the landmark changes such as moving to Thursdays and going Primetime. Even then there was only a 1 point change.
Vince Russo came onto TNA along with Primetime TV. The ratings increase was expected. Over the course of the next year, ratings continued to slowly rise by a point. When TNA went 2-hours, this didn’t help TNA with the ratings, it should have hurt them since there are more segments to average out. Not only did they maintain their ratings but they added to them. Maintaining through the 2-hour timeslot, the Thanksgiving Holiday and the 2 shows against ECW. TNA recently hit an all time high fanbase.
So in conclusion to that the numbers speak for themselves, should you be able to hear them:
Pre-Russo Era of TNA (No clear growth besides for landmark changes)
Russo Era (Clear 2 point growth despite rougher TV environment)
When people tell you that TNA hasn’t grown at all since Russo took over, you tell them they are wrong. TNA does grow, just ever so slowly.
